چکیده

We conducted field sampling in a subarctic shallow lagoon (Hichirippu Lagoon) in the eastern part of Hokkaido, Japan. We investigated the chemical composition of the water column, sediment, and sinking particles collected by the sediment trap. The standing stock of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) in the water column and surface sediment were 0.4 to 9.3 and 35.9 to 184 mg m , respectively. Using stable isotope analysis, the contribution rate of microphytobenthos to the sinking particles was found to range from 63 to 74%. The average Chl-a content in the sinking particles was significantly lower than that of the water column. Our results suggest that the contribution of phytoplankton present in the water column to the Chl-a collected in the traps is likely to be negligible. We assumed that the Chl-a fluxes obtained in this study were microphytobenthic resuspension fluxes. The daily flux of Chl-a accounted for 47.0 to 1,270% of the total standing stock of Chl-a in the water column. The mean relative percentage of daily Chl-a flux divided by the standing stock of Chl-a in the sediment was 6.5%, which indicates that approximately 7% of the microphytobenthos present in the sediment was resuspended, and 93% of the total succeeded at escaping the winnowing action. Although the resuspension phenomenon had little effect on the population of microphytobenthos, the resuspended microphytobenthos had a major impact on the total micro algal biomass in the water column. This is the first direct estimate of microphytobenthic resuspension flux in shallow estuaries.

Nitrogen fluxes, denitrification and the role of microphytobenthos in microtidal shallow-water sediments: an annual study

The annual cycle of oxygen and nitrogen flux, denitrification and microphytobenthic variables (primary production, biomass, composition and calculated N demand) were studied for 2 shallow-water microtidal sediment sites in NE Kattegat, 1 sandy and 1 silty, by incubating undisturbed sediment in the laboratory in light and darkness. Both sites (2 stations within each) were characterised by low co...

Nutrient (P, N) dynamics in the southwestern Kattegat, Scandinavia: sedimentation and resuspension effects

The yearly nutrient supply from land and atmosphere to the study area in SW Kattegat is 10 900 tons of N and 365 tons of P. This is only few percent of the supply from adjacent marine areas, as the yearly transport through the study area is 218 000 tons of N and 18 250 tons of P. Yearly net deposition makes up 1340 tons of N (on average 2.5 g m yr) and 477 ton of P (on average 0.9 g m yr). Shal...

Conservative management with external coaptation technique for treatment of a severely comminuted fracture of the proximal phalanx in a Holstein-Friesian cow

A 3-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow was evaluated because of sudden onset of right hind limb lameness and pain with fetlock swelling for 2 days. Based on the history, clinical index scores and computed radiographic examinations, the case was accurately diagnosed to be a severely comminuted fracture of the proximal phalanx. This cow was assigned for conservative treatment with external coaptation...

Age and growth of marbled sole Pleuronectes yokohamae werer estimated from growth increments in otolith. The samples were collected with commercial set nets and an experimental bottom trawl net in Kikonai Bay and the nearby waters, southern coast of Hokkaido, from May 1994 to July 1995. Vulnerability assessment of surface water quality with an innovative integrated multi-parameter water quality index (IMWQI)

The development of a surface water evaluation index is a critical factor in the assessment, restoration and protection of stream water quality. Quantifying water pollution in specific grade using dominant parameters is important, as this can explain the current state of water pollution with accuracy. As a result, an integrated multi-parameter water quality index has been developed. It is based ...
